Born to Die

Christmas is nearly here, even though it may look and feel different. The typical “wonderful time of the year” is stifled with the reduced shopping hours, curfews, and mandates to keep us all “safe.” This year has been like none other as our country and world morph into something we do not recognize. Fear has gripped us all in one way or another. Either you’re afraid of getting covid and also giving it to another, or you’re wondering how you’re going to pay your mortgage next month because your business was closed. Fear, it seems, is being pumped into our brains with the news outlets feeding us with constant tickers of rising covid cases. But there are other casualties to consider called the “deaths of despair” that will undoubtedly find their way to the surface, outpacing direct covid deaths. While our countries GDP crashes, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and suicides all go up exponentially.

The habit of turning off the news and dumbing down our minds with nonsense TV is commonplace to relieve some of the pressures and changes this year has brought. Still, soon reality creeps back into our sight, and we are once again plagued with more uncertainty and confusion. No matter how you look at it or what side you identify with, it’s easy to find yourself tired, frustrated, and weary of the world. So how do you handle weariness? The world will tell you to drink away your sorrows or take the pills to keep you numb, which only leads to more despair.

But take heart, there is a thrill of hope, for the weary world rejoices!

This year, the Christmas message is more important than ever. The fact that God came to us in the most vulnerable way, born of a virgin, who at the estimated age of 13 rode 90 miles while pregnant on a donkey, after living through the scandal of being pregnant before marriage is, well, a testimony of faith and endurance. It couldn’t have been easy, even after both being visited by angels, to trust and follow God. Joseph had to choose to love Mary over the law, which said she would have been stoned to death. Mary had to endure being pregnant, not knowing if Joseph would accept her. Their world was uncertain, but they both walked in faith, all the way to Bethlehem, where the fullness of time had come; God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law to redeem those who were under the law that we might receive the adoption as sons. Galatians 4:4-5

From the beginning, Jesus was working to save us from ourselves.  Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel.` and all through the Old and new testament, the prophecy of Christ is found.

Isaiah 7:14 Therefore, the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son and shall call his name Immanuel.

Isaiah 9: 6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son, is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Micah 5:2But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Though you are little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out of you shall come forth to Me The One to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from of old, From everlasting.”

John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

This every changing world needs the WORD more than ever. The promises of Christ are real. Jesus was born to die for you and your iniquity. He is the best gift you will ever receive. You just have to reach out to Him with your heart, and He will hear you and redeem you and save you from the shifting sand under your feet. It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve listened to the Christmas story; my prayer for you is that this year it pierces your heart and brings an awareness of where you are in this world and where this world is headed.
